It’s that time of year when the ovens stay warm due to the all of the holiday baking. I love to surprise friends with cranberry scones or chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven. Jamie from our Product Development team recently concocted a delicious pumpkin doughnut recipe for dogs made with our TruFood Make It Fresh food. I knew I had to give it a try!

Ingredients were simple:

•    ¼ cup dry Wellness TruFood Make It Fresh Dog Food (we suggest Turkey, Beef, or Lamb)
•    4 tbsp pure pumpkin purée
•    1 egg
•    1 cup almond flour
•    Cinnamon (optional)
•    Mini doughnut pan

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix Make It Fresh with pumpkin purée and egg and mix well.

2. Add almond flour, ¼ cup at a time, mixing until incorporated each time. If desired, sprinkle a pinch or two of cinnamon into the dough mix for added aroma. The dough should be sticky, but additional almond flour can be added until it reaches desired consistency.

As you can tell, Dakota was very interested. She knows the Make It Fresh packaging and gets excited every time I bring it out of the cupboard. Something about the fresh, raw ingredients gets her drooling!

3. Lightly flour a flat surface with almond flour, then remove chunks of dough and roll into a cylinder about ½ inch in diameter and 4 in long. The flat surface may need to be floured more than once. Place rolled dough into doughnut wells, carefully smoothing over the ends of the cylinder to stick together.

4. Cook at 350°F for 30 minutes. Let cool in the pan until the pan is no longer hot to the touch. Carefully remove doughnuts and cool on a cooling rack for at least 20 minutes. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
